About The Autism Awareness Walk
The Autism Awareness Walk started right here in Plattsburgh, NY in 2005 through the dedication of local parents, volunteers, and community businesses. It is a non-competitive walk dedicated to raising awareness of autism and raising funds for Autism Speaks and Nexus. The walk is not timed and walkers can walk all or part of the distance. The walk route is wheelchair accessible and we welcome strollers.

Autism Speaks is a national organization of parents, clinicians, and scientists dedicated to finding the causes, effective biological treatments, and the cure for autism and related disorders. Currently, Autism Speaks, is the result of a merger between the National Alliance for Autism Research in 2006 and Cure Autism Now in 2007. Autism Speaks funded $20 million worth of autism research in 2006. In addition, Autism Speaks supports early intervention programs for children with autism and provides the world's most comprehensive web site on autism.
Nexus is a local social competence program for children with autism spectrum disorders. It offers a structured after-school program that meets weekly on the campus of Plattsburgh State University. Graduate and undergraduate psychology students, as well as volunteer professionals from community schools, work under the supervision of Dr. Pat Egan to teach social skills and self-management strategies to Nexus participants. The program serves students with diagnoses of autism or related disorders. Nexus is currently located in Sibley Hall. Dr. Egan can be reached at (518) 564-3381 or eganp@plattsburgh.edu.
